I was surprised to find out that my former classmate Madonna Decena is now a singer in Britain. I wouldn’t even find out about it if it wasn’t for the Filipino blogs. The 2004 American Idol was the last talent show I’ve watch, which only goes to show how out of touch I am with these type of TV shows.
My last memory of Madonna was in Quezon City, way way back when we were just kids. She was one of those types, those daughters which mothers are usually proud of. She was the top of the class. I remember when the best in classroom decoration contest came, she proposed we use crumpled manila paper to serve as a mountain in our mounted wall fresco. It was an almost ingenious idea.

There is an ongoing cold war in the Philippines Blogosphere today. The battle lines have been drawn, sides were taken, warning shots fired. The result is a messy Mexican standout where neither of the warring faction wants to back down. The only thing that keeps this from going into a full scale war is reputation.

Philippines used to be a model of sex education in Asia. Countries like China, Japan, even Thailand used to look up to us. Not anymore. After decades of bit by bit, year by year chipping away at the DepEd sex education program, the Catholic Church has eroded our leadership.

After suffering a defeat, the theological empire strikes again.
The church bullying tactics reminds of an old fable wherein a scorpion asked a frog to carry him across a river. The frog, wary of the scorpion’s sting, was apprehensive. The scorpion argues that if it stung the frog, both of them would drown. The frog, persuaded by the logic of the seemingly harmless request, agrees. They both drowned. “Why?” asked the frog. “I’m a scorpion. It’s my nature,” the scorpion answered.
